Family Math Night

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on February 27, 2009 by Budd Black

Family Math Night is a school function at my daughter's school where the whole family can come together and have fun doing math.  This is actually very popular at this school.  It doesn't differ much from Family Meth Night at the school across town.  Well, except for the educational value of the event.

They actually have Elementary Ed. students come over from the university (MTSU) that is located directly across the street.  It is part of one of their classes to make a game out of math and present it at Family Math Night.  I think dropouts and PoliSci people run Family Meth Night.  There were at least 12 game stations for each grade level.  The 2nd grade stuff was too easy for Ashli so we moved on to the 3rd grade where things got challenging.  Ally had fun in the Kindergarten area.

Apparently there is a prerequsite to getting in the Elem. Ed. program at MTSU.  You have to be A) female, B) young, C) very attractive.  It made escorting the girls around to all the booths an enjoyable experience for all.

I don't think letting these students run the program at Ashli's school is fair though.  They probably walked away from the night thinking kids are smart and like to learn.  If this had been held at a normal school, I don't think turnout would have been as good.

Family Meth night ran much longer but was eventually broken up by the police.

Books as collectables
Hardcover? Or paperback?
Illustrations? Or just text?
First editions? Or you don’t care?
Signed by the author? Or not?
I have hardcovers and I have paperbacks.  I have illustrated books, I have plain text books.  I may have some first editions, I may have some advanced reader copies.  I have signed and unsigned books (mostly unsigned).  Heck, I even have some books in electronic form.
At one point I wanted to own every book I have ever read in Hardback form.  Wow, how silly of me.  Now, I loath buying hardcovers and am as likely to give away a paperback as let someone borrow it.  The exception being Trade sized paperbacks, they are just too expensive.  I think it is important to have a nice home library, but you have to draw the line somewhere.  There is a difference between home library and home is a library.

Now it makes sense

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on February 24, 2009 by Budd Black

I was thinking that Fox's move of putting T:SCC and Dollhouse on Friday nights was to kill each show dead.  Then I realized that X-Files came on Fridays for a long time and the show did very well there.  Then I thought about the sci fi channel and their Sci Fi Friday promotion of the recent past.  The current lineup is BSG that is ending, two incarnations of Stargate (don't watch, don't care) that I think are ending, Doctor Who which won't be back for another year, and some show called sanctuary that I have never heard of (maybe I should hulu, but given scifi's recent past with original programming maybe not).  Fox is making a play here.  They are filling a void that the absense of these shows has created.  If it works it is brilliant.  But, it won't work, both shows will be cancelled.

Docker’s Iconic 5-Pocket Khaki

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on February 23, 2009 by Budd Black

Wow, I got a pair of these pants this weekend and I really like them.  They are cut like jeans and have that same oh so comfortable feel.  They look nice and quite a bit more hip than regular khakis.  I think I may have to buy more of these.  I am not being paid for this review, but if anyone at Dockers wants to send me a few free pair I wear 33×30.

The Samurai Burger

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on February 20, 2009 by Budd Black

I have made this for friends on several occasions.  It is your normal burger patty sprinkled with garlic.  Top it with cheddar cheese.  The secret to this burger is the sauce.  Take some Mayo and put it into a small bowl, then add some wasabi.  If you are against mayo, you can try it with mustard but the mayo is the way to go.  Serve on bun, I suggest sour dough.  I wouldn't top it with much more than lettuce.  The cheddar is a must.  It sets of the wasabi in the perfect flavor combination.  Cook one up this weekend and let me know what you think.

RAW, Here I come!

I am not a huge wresslin fan, but I have been known to let the remote linger on it for a few minutes.  I am being given some tickets to see the event here in Nashville on Monday.  Should be fun.
